VISCOELASTIC MATTRESSES: THIS IS WHAT NEED TO KNOW TO IMPROVE YOUR REST
Sleeping on the wrong type of mattress can cause you backaches and other health problems. To improve your rest and avoid such problems you need to know what type of mattress is just right for you. Viscoelastic mattresses are emerging as a great option to get tid of those health problems.
A firmness more than optimal, adaptability to the characteristics of our body, greater durability and its ability to improve our blood circulation are some of the benefits that the viscoelastic mattress can provide us. We bring you some key tips when buying this kind of mattresses, will you accompany us?
Everything you need to know about viscoelastic mattresses
The viscoelastic material is ergonomically adjusted to our body, reducing or relieving pressure points throughout the contact surface.
This material was originally developed by the Ames research center of NASA, in order to relieve the pressure exerted by the force of gravity experienced by astronauts during takeoff.
This type of mattresses can be differentiated by the way they are manufactured. In this sense, while foaming or known as open pore affects the circulation of air in the material itself, the so-called molding presents a pore much more closed than the previous one and the circulation of the air is much slower.
The main quality of viscoelastic mattresses is their adaptability. The viscoelastic material is characterized by its resilience (ability to recover its original form by itself). This makes mattresses made with this material eliminate pressure points on the body, helping to reduce muscle and nerve tensions significantly improving blood circulation; besides being durable and indeformable.
It is true that the viscoelastic material is sensitive to temperature (in the sense that it becomes softer with heat and hardens with cold). But if it should be clarified that, by itself, does not give heat.
Regardless of the material and quality of this type of mattress, the maximum duration of the viscoelastic is estimated at about 10 years. The same happens with other models if we stick to what is recommended by ASOCAMA (Spanish Association of the Bed), which recommends changing this rest equipment every ten years to be able to maintain ideal hygienic conditions and, in short, to offer our body the rest you deserve.
In any case, in order to bet as much as possible on the durability of this mattress , it is very important to confirm the proper placement of the equipment, in such a way that the viscoelastic material itself remains in the upper part. To keep the padding in the proper conditions, it is convenient to rotate it 180º every quarter approximately.
The ideal thing is to protect the mattress with an elastic and breathable cover , avoiding above all the use of those covers with plasticized fabric. Likewise, the use of bedspreads or other types of accessories that do not allow for proper transpiration should be avoided. It is also very important that the protective interior is never removed during cleaning of the cover. Being sensitive to temperature, we should avoid exposing viscoelastic mattresses to elements or heat-emitting materials such as hot water bags or electric blankets. A constant exposure to this type of sources can negatively affect the properties of the material itself.
To differentiate the viscoelastic face of a mattress, you should know that this type of resting equipment is usually upholstered on a single side with quilted fabrics equipped with fiber, more or less soft viscoelastic material, and fabrics subjected to some kind of intelligent treatment. For this kind of fabrics, very different treatments are applied with different features that, logically, will have a better rest. Normally, the interior face is upholstered using 3D materials that are breathable and that will maximize ventilation and aeration.
Because viscoelastic mattresses do not require ventilation or special transpiration, it is possible to use them with any type of base such as a slatted base or an upholstered base. However, we can highlight some cases in which adequate ventilation of the rest equipment itself is desirable, such as bathtub beds, varnished bases or tatami, since some of these supports could hinder the correct aeration of the mattress.
