THE SECRET TO STAY MOTIVATED
“MOTIVATION SERVES AS YOUR STARTING POINT. HABIT MAKES YOU CONTINUE” – JIM RYUN.
Everyone tries to stay motivated, it is a universal concern. Whether it is to learn a foreign language, finish a file, create content for your blog, go back to school or work after a holiday, lose weight, play sports regularly, read a book. The intention is there, sometimes velléitaire, the procrastination prevails and at the moment when the temptation takes you away from your objective, you plunge. Well, no doubt you are a human like the others.
However, we can leave the mold, and no longer flinch at the slightest pitfall and resist the storm which prevents us from achieving a fixed goal – by ourselves or by a professional commitment, for example; for oneself or for the people who rely on us.
Techniques to stay motivated abound on the Internet and in personal development books. Some tips are good, but it also seems important to understand how we function. Especially before spending money and time in techniques or motivational training that are sometimes the only way some manipulators we lighten the wallet.
FOCUS ON MOTIVATION AND EMOTIONS
The preface to Johnmarshall Reeve ‘s ” Psychology of Motivation and Emotions ” book, an essential work in the field, explains that ” Motivation and emotions represent fundamentally human states that, even if they originate at the beginning of the” humanity, still retain their importance today.Indeed, understanding these processes is of great use not only to guide our own behaviors but also to illuminate our understanding of the world around us and our resulting interactions. It is therefore not surprising that this research area represents one of the most vibrant in psychology, where thousands of articles are published annually. A thorough knowledge of this sector still in turmoil is an arduous but fundamental task. “
“Learning about motivation and emotions is very interesting. Few subjects arouse and nourish the imagination.Everything about who we are, why we want what we want and how we can improve our lives, is obviously interesting. Similarly, anything that concerns what others want, why they want what they want, and how we can improve their lives, is also interesting. When we try to explain why people want what they want and do what they do, we can turn to the theories of motivation to learn more about such things as human nature, ‘an individual provides for fulfillment and power, sexual desires and the search for intimacy, and emotions such as fear and anger. These theories explain how to cultivate a talent and develop creativity,”
OUR SOURCE OF MOTIVATION CHANGES AT THE MID-POINT OF THE PURSUIT OF AN OBJECTIVE
According to recent research, our motivational source changes mid-way through the pursuit of a goal. People who lose interest in achieving a goal can benefit from trying out different motivational strategies.
Have you ever started off on a new goal, like losing weight, learning a foreign language or saving more money? You know, this famous first period when everything works, to finally not find this motivation effervescence after a period of time of habit, and then let everything drop.
Reasons for playing sports. The science of motivation.
Researchers at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba (Canada) have discovered a possible explanation for this common phenomenon. Our source of motivation changes as we move toward a goal. Their findings are available online in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.
In the study, researchers predicted that, in the early stages of pursuing a goal, participants would be motivated by their hope, aspirations and positive aspects to achieve their desired outcome. For example, people who wanted to lose 10 kg imagined their appearance at the desired weight, buying new clothes and feeling more energy. This is known as a kind of motivation through promotion, gratification – the carrot that drives the donkey -, and people in that mentality are motivated by positive things that they can advance, such as exercising more sport and eat more fruits and vegetables.
Only, as people got closer to reaching their goals, researchers predicted that people would move on to a preventive motivational mindset. At this stage, they would be motivated by their responsibilities, their duties and the will to avoid something negative. People who try to lose 10 Kg could think of the disappointment of not having reached the goal of weight loss or not harmonize with a coveted garment. They begin to focus on things to avoid doing harm, such as driving without dessert and a sedentary lifestyle.

“Nothing is more unfathomable than the system of motivations behind our actions.” -Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
The Mirror of the Soul
The researchers conducted five experiments and found that their prediction was correct: motivation shifted from gratification to prevention. Generally speaking, people are mainly focused on gratification, so they are good at starting goals, but not as good at accomplishing them.
The results of the study, therefore, suggest that people may have a better chance of achieving a goal by supporting late motivations – by looking at the final goal closer. Focusing on what should be avoided to achieve our goals means that we are more likely to go through all stages without losing our motivation to start, say the researchers.
These results are therefore the meaning of theories based on the concept of the goal.” A goal is an internal representation of the desired result. It is both a target, the result to be achieved, and what guides the action by giving it direction and energy. Two types of goals are to be distinguished, classically identified in the literature by the pair approach/avoidance “.
For those who are trying to save money for a home or a trip, for example, in the beginning, this could help to find positive savings strategies, such as getting a better paying job or investing money. Later in the process, focus on avoidance strategies, such as taking dinner at a restaurant less often or making fewer expensive purchases. Even if these are things that seem simple and obvious to some people, it would seem that many of the set goals are not met because people often forget to have visibility on the purpose of the objective.
THE THEORY OF GOALS
“The Theory of Goals where motivation is closely related to the definition of objectives, from which behavior will be influenced. According to this theory,” in order to drive and lead to the greatest performance, a goal must be difficult to achieve, specific and desired”. According to the theory of control, the goals are more or less motivating depending on whether it is a goal of a concrete behavior, little motivation, or an abstract objective (to become a good professional) much more motivating. In this motivational hierarchy, we find the concrete objective, the performance objective, the master objective and the abstract objective (Vallerand and Thill 1993) from the lowest (not very motivating) to the highest (very motivating).”
The secret of happiness
“The first job of a manager is not to bring motivation but to remove the obstacles. “, Scott Adams
These results also have implications for marketers. Companies sometimes frame their advertisements on the basis that consumers are sooner or later in the pursuit of their objectives. For example, a gym for people who are starting to get in shape could often focus on the exciting possibilities and the latest gym fitness techniques that will help members realize their aspirations.
Finally, it is also important to understand that loss of motivation can also come from a poor social and family environment or a health problem. For example, researchers have shown that dopamine also regulates motivation, forcing individuals to control and persevere their dopamine levels in case of doubt and loss of motivation. Finding (to the extent possible) solutions to eradicate what cuts your motivation will, therefore, be a starting point to achieve your goals more serenely.
Clearly, the secret to remaining motivated is not unique. There is no definitive solution. But the common and overarching things of those who succeed are to manage priorities and improve their management in the future, create short-term goals to avoid dispersal, and differentiate between important and urgent.
