THE BENEFITS OF BLACK TEA ARE LINKED TO GOOD HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS
The benefits of green tea are known to be numerous, as evidenced by a lot of regular studies on this Asian beverage. However, the benefits of black tea on health are less well known. A new study from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) shows that polyphenols (antioxidant) in both varieties alter intestinal bacteria.

Everyone is aware of the benefits of green tea but a recent study has suggested that black tea could also promote weight loss and other health benefits by altering the bacteria in the intestine.
According to researchers at UCLA, a study on mice showed that black tea alters the metabolism of energy in the liver by altering the intestinal metabolites.
BLACK TEA HAS SIMILAR POWERS TO GREEN TEA
The study found that black tea and green tea have changed the ratio of intestinal bacteria in animals: the percentage of bacteria associated with obesity has decreased, while bacteria associated with lean body mass have increased.
The new results showed that polyphenols in black tea , too large to be absorbed in the small intestine, stimulate the growth of the intestinal bacteria and the formation of short chain fatty acids , a type of bacterial metabolite that has shown that it altered the metabolism energy in the liver. The authors of the study said they knew that green tea polyphenols are more effective and offer more health benefits than polyphenols from black tea, but thanks to a specific mechanism of the intestinal microbiome , black tea can also contribute to good health and weight loss in humans.
The results suggested that green teas and black teas are prebiotics, substances that induce the growth of good microorganisms that contribute to a person’s well-being.

In the study, four groups of mice received different diets – two of which were supplemented with green tea or black tea extracts: Low in fat and high in sugar; High in fat and sugar; Extract of high-fat tea, sugar and green tea; Extract of tea, high content of sugar and black tea.
After four weeks the weights of mice that received green tea or black tea extract dropped to the same levels as those of mice who received a low-fat diet throughout the study. The researchers also collected samples from the large intestine of mice to measure the bacteria content and liver tissue to measure fat deposits.

Finally, only mice who consumed black tea extracts had an increase in type of bacteria called Pseudobutyrivibrio , which could help explain the difference between how black tea and green tea alter energy metabolism. What the study does not say is the precision on the variety of black tea, its origin, and whether it is an organic black tea – which would be advisable eventually.
