CANNED FOOD: THIS IS WHAT NOBODY TOLD YOU
Our fast-paced life barely leaves us time to cook and prepare dishes with fresh and healthy products. That is why canned foods make up a good part of our diet, thanks mainly to the convenience and speed they provide us. The problem lies in the risk that these may pose for our health, because some theories indicate that they contain a high level of toxicity.
There is a great controversy regarding canned food, which has been collected by the media for years. For this reason we have probably found opinions of all kinds in this regard, since it is totally harmless food until they can cause cancer. The result of all this is the confusion of the consumer, who is lost among such unhappy positions.
The truth is that canned foods have certain advantages and disadvantages that are worth analyzing.
Are tin cans good enough?
Those who are in favor of the commercialization of these products base their argument on the safety of metal containers. According to Eduardo Mondragón , manager of the National Chamber of Manufacturers of Metal Containers (Canafem), “The cans are hygienic and resistant containers that allow different foods and drinks to be accessible to all parts of the world at any time of the year.”
Also, some experts say that canned foods help us to better assimilate proteins, although in a smaller proportion. They also explain that these foods do not contain harmful preservatives and that they do not lose their freshness during the process. In addition, its flavor remains intact and retain its nutritional value.
Are Can foods harmful?
On the opposite side we find several arguments that can make us rethink reduce or eliminate these types of products from our diet. One of them focuses on toxic substances that include cans, such as epoxy resin or formaldehyde. On the other hand, tuna cans have mercury, highly harmful to our body. All this without forgetting the presence of Clostridiumbotulinum, a bacteria that reproduces in foods that do not have oxygen and that secretes botulinum toxins. They can produce respiratory and muscular paralysis and block the nervous system.
There are studies that affirm the presence of toxic substances in canned foods such as epoxy resin or formaldehyde.
On the other hand, these products usually have a high sodium content , since in many cases salt is used as a preservative, which favors the appearance of hypertension. At the same time, they tend to suffer losses of magnesium, potassium, calcium and other vitamins during the process. In addition, its concentration in fatty acids is higher than in fresh foods, so it increases its caloric density. You also have to take into account the extra fats that are usually added to these products.
Regarding all this, it is worth highlighting the study carried out by the School of Public Health of Harvard University in 2011 on the consumption of canned foods. For five days in a row, a series of volunteers ate canned soup, which increased the concentration of bisphenol A (BPA) in the urine by more than 1,000%. Later, they consumed the same dish but cooked it naturally for another five days, resulting in the total absence of this substance.
These data make more sense if we take into account that bisphenol A is a substance used in the manufacture of food and beverage cans, associated with diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases. In fact, in Canada it is declared as a toxic substance and prohibited in the manufacture of baby bottles.
As we can see, there is a wide variety of opinions and theories about the quality of canned foods. In any case, it is recommended to consume them in moderation , always positioning fresh foods as the basis of our diet.
